The AMS December meeting and Holiday Party will be held at Chesapeake Energy in downtown Chicago.

Tuesday, December 2, 2008

 5:30-6:45 p.m - Dinner/party - compliments of Chesapeake Energy (i.e. its free)

6:45-8:00p.m - Meeting

Speakers:

- Steve Drews, Associated Vice President and Lead Meteorologist for Aon Re Global, will present “Applications of Modern-Day Meteorology in the Insurance World.”

 

 - Mark Russo (Chesapeake Energy) will present the Winter Outlook. In addition, forms for the 7th annual Chicago AMS winter weather contest will be available – GIANT  prizes awarded at the Banquet on May 2, 2009.

Dr. Walker Ashley (MET Faculty)--"A reassessment of U.S. struck-by-lightning mortality"
 

Dr. David Changnon (MET Faculty)--“Last winter and how it compares to winters that occurred in the late 1970s in northern Illinois”
 

Bethany Norris (Senior MET Student)--Internship/ research this past summer through the prestigious NOAA Ernest F. Hollings Scholarship Program.

 

Becky Belobraydich (MET Student)--Internship active research this past summer at the National Weather Center (NWC) on the University of Oklahoma campus in Norman, Oklahoma. This “active research” internship was part of the Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program.

Driving Directions - We have been told that after you turn onto US-30 West, make a right at the second stoplight (Sturdy Road) and then make a left into the East Entrance to Campus.  The Kalley-Christopher (Meteorology) Building is very close to this entrance as can be seen in the Campus Map.

Joint Meeting with the NIU AMS Chapter

Speakers: Dr. Walker Ashley, Alan Black, and Victor Gensini

 Dr. Ashley will discuss the conclusions of a recent study assessing region-specific tornado vulnerabilities in the US from 1880-2005. In addition, Mr. Black will reveal the conclus   ions from a recent study on the vulnerabilities of nonconvective windstorms. Finally, Mr. Gensini will discuss variations in the distributions of parameters that lead to deep moist convection.

- The Chesapeake Energy GIS team (from Oklahoma City) will discuss the role of GIS applications in meteorology today

Travel Information:
Public transportation is highly recommended. There is no parking at Fox. There are meters on Lake Street and also more meters one block east of Michigan at Lake St. There are also a few parking garages within a block of the building. In the evening, it is possible to get meters. Fox is located directly across the street from the Hard Rock Hotel.
Parking is available at Michigan Plaza 24/7/365. Please contact System Parking at 312.819.5064 for current rate information... about 15-25 per 3 hours.

Building Security Procedures:
Enter Michigan Plaza at 205 N. Michigan on the Lake St. Side --- there is a CVS there but it is under construction so the main entrance to the building is blocked. Enter the building at any location and the security will be able to point you towards FOX NEWS CHICAGO. They are located on the first floor. There is a locked entrance... just buzz and the guards will expect you. Sign in and we'll get started!
